I suppose I just wanted to ride my bicycle, I always knew I was addicted to the wind in my hair.

This day has many different meanings for different people. But to recognize the anniversary of one human's intelligence for chemical creation is an odd phenomenon which brings together an interesting group of individuals in a manner that is not just in it's infancy but one I think will grow and like the inevitable force of humanities knack for tinkering only enlarge in depth and provide layers of influence and positive intrigue if approached correctly.

Though such as it may be a day for a particular anniversary I not only would like to spend this day in thought and reverence for the gift of Albert Hofmann and his life of 102 years, but would like to take this time and hold in my mind the will and hopes for those who dared to seek that apple which is engulfed in draconian forbode.

I would not only like to bring up the idea but also prod the thought to any of you that have taken your time to read this, and to consider those thousands and millions that have sacrificed luxuries, families, social status, personal and private freedoms, imprisoned, insulted, chastised, and even executed simply because they sought something or believed in something more then what is considered reality.

As the Church Inquisition silences and censors the work of Galileo, we today hardly look twice or even comment that the same Revolutionaries are treated no better.

Nicotine linked to pleasurable feelings

Why is it so hard to quit smoking cigarettes? One reason may be that nicotine acts on the same brain system in humans as heroin and morphine, a new study has found. Earlier studies in animals had found that that nicotine could set off the release of brain chemicals called opioids, which play a role in suppressing pain and causing pleasurable feelings. The new study is the first to establish that the same process occurs in people, the researchers said.
To prove that opioids were involved, the researchers first had to figure out a way to use positron emission tomography or PET scanners to measure opioid brain activity. They also had to persuade officials at the University of Michigan to waive the no-smoking rules and allow their volunteers to smoke in the hospital's scanner. (They solved the problem by figuring out a way to vent the smoke outside.)
The study, led by David J. Scott, a graduate student, found that smokers appeared to have an increased flow of opioids in the brain all the time. After they smoked a cigarette, there was even more opioid activity in the parts of the brain involved in emotion and desire. The findings were presented recently at a meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.
Scott said that he had expected to confirm the nicotine-opioid link, but that it was more pronounced that he had thought. He also said there was no question that the nicotine was responsible, since the volunteers were given both regular cigarettes and nicotine-free ones.
"What we're seeing is purely the pharmacological action of the nicotine," he said.

·               Wouter Hanegraaff (University of Amsterdam, NL) - Entheogens and Contemporary Religion.

·               1938-1950s (From Hofmann to Huxley)

·               Neoshamanism - Origins: 1960s experimentation with natural psychoactive.

·               The Pre-Prohibition Phase - Wasson sparked the American interest in psychedelics and therefor the counterculture.

·               Matthew Johnson (John Hopkins University, USA) - A Systematic Research Program Examining Psilocybin, Mystical Experience, Personality Change, Adverse Effects, and Therapeutic Applications.

·               Psilocybin - Classic 5-HT2a SERT Agonist.

·               Assessed study with 36 high functioning individuals with high dose 30 mg./70 kg. Psilocybin or around 5 grams dried P. cubensis.

·               8 hr. drug sessions with 2 monitors always present, participants are asked to just lie down and wear headphones and blindfolds to promote an introspective experience.

·               39% of participants suffer feelings of fear, fear of insanity, and feelings of being trapped. This occurred 6 cases with 30mg./70kg. and 1 case with 20 mg./70kg. Psilocybin.

·               Human psychopharmacology and dose effects of salvinorin A, a kappa opioid agonist hallucinogenic plant.

·               4 Participants with previous use of Salvia divinorum, the study was performed with vaporized salvinorin A.

·               Christal Gadiot (Utrecht University, NL) - Unifying the Objective and Subjective Sides of Psilocybin: Benefits for Future Research.

·               Objective Effects - Psilocin acts on the 5-HT2a serotonin receptors.

·               5-HT1a Serotonin Receptor – Regulates food in-take, sexual behavior.

·               5-HT2c Serotonin Receptor - Effects thought to act on the 5-HT2a receptors may actually be caused by the 5-HT2c receptors.

·               Researchers are still interested and think other receptors are expected to produce psychosomatic effects related to the Psilocybin experience.

·               Robin Carhart-Harris (Imperial College, UK) - Neuroimaging Studies with Psilocybin and MDMA.

·               Psilocybin Research - Serotonin Acting Tryptamine, naturally occurring.

·               Psilocybin breaks down into Psilocin or 4-OH-DMT, close relatives of Serotonin.

·               5-HT2a is located mostly in the cortical regions of the brain.

·               fMRI: Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL)

·               15 healthy volunteers, previous experience with hallucinogens. Mean age 34, 18 minute pulsed scan ASL*2. Eyes open, task free resting state, with 2mg. Psilocybin IV.

·               Changes in Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF) - Decrease in CBF in the thalamus and the areas of the prefrontal cortex after Psilocybin IV.

·               Reducing activity in these regions can inhibit our body’s filters that allow these psychoactive states to take place in the brain.

·               After administration of Psilocybin there was an immediate reduction in connectivity between the Medial PFC and PCC.

·               Also with MDMA there was a decrease in connectivity between the Medial PFC and PCC. These connections are the opposite of those observed in a brain with depression; which exhibits a strong connection between the Medial PFC and PCC.

·               So this suggests that Psilocybin and MDMA have strong promise in the treatment of depression.

·               Brain networks during a sober state usually function in unique brain wave formations; under the influence of Psilocybin these brain networks seem to all blur into one synchronization.

·               This blurring of the brain wave network can also be seen in people with psychosis, schizophrenia, and states induced by deep meditation.

·               The PCC has the highest density of 5-HT2a receptors, though Psilocybin specifically reduces signals and activity in the PCC region.

·               Magneto encephalography (MEG) Scan Study - Again 15 experienced healthy volunteers, placebo controlled with 2 mg. Psilocybin IV.

·               MEG: Decreases in Oscillatory Power, the is greatest shown in the brain's Alpha Waves where also the PCC resides.

·               5-HT2a SERT receptors are most dense in layer V, the densest layer where larger cells resides.

·               Psilocybin Increases Excitation of Deep Pyramidal Cells, these are the deeper cells that reside in the layer V. This is thought to be relevant to the decrease of PCC activity.

·               Findings = Psilocybin decreases activity in regions that are disproportionally active at baseline. Psilocybin decreases connectivity in brain networks. Psilocybin decreases the separation between brain networks. Psilocybin disrupts brain oscillatory power.

·               MDMA Research - Phenylethylamine, Amphetamine base; SERT Releaser, DAT Releaser, as well as Norepinephrine, as well as neurotransmitter re-uptake.

·               25 healthy volunteers, double blind, placebo controlled study; with 100 mg. MDMA Orally 45 minutes before proceeding with two MRI scans.

·               MDMA effects on brain flow - decrease in CBF in various cortical and the thalamus regions.

·               MDMA has shown to increase the brain's response to positive memories.

·               MDMA also decreased the brain's response to negative memories in the brain.

·               These findings are interesting because they have significant effects in the same brain regions most affected by depression. This shows great promise for Psilocybin and MDMA in the treatment of depression.

·               Mendel Kaelen (Imperial College London, UK) - Using Dynamic Casual Modeling to Examine the Acute Effects of Psilocybin and MDMA on Autobiographical Memory Recollection.

·               Autobiographical Memory Recollection

·               Autobiographical Memory: Episodic, personal significance.

·               Medial Temporal Lobe - parahippocampus, peripheral, entorhinal cortex, hippocampus.

·               Parahippocampus - Stimulated greatly by Ayahuasca.

·               Increases in sensory and memory regions where stimulated using fMRI studies with both Psilocybin and MDMA.

·               Jordi Riba (ICEERS) - Introduction

·               International Center for Ethnobotanical Education, Research and Service (ICEERS) - a tax-exempt, non-profit organization. Working for the introduction of Ayahuasca and Iboga plants in the therapeutic field of work. Also supporting indigenous cultures and traditions.

·               Maria Carvalho (ICEERS) - Ibogaine in Brazil

·               Ibogaine is a therapeutic tool, not a treatment on it's own and should be used in a program setting.

·               Clinica Cleuza Canan, Brazil - Cleuza Canan and Dr. Bruno Rasmussen M.D. started studying Ibogaine in 1994 and started using it as a treatment in 1997.

·               They have developed and provide 2 year Ibogaine Addiction Treatment Programs.

·               Preparation for Treatment - Patient must be 20 days clean of the addicted drug before Ibogaine can be administered.

·               The amount of 12-20mg./kg bodyweight of pharmaceutical grade Ibogaine HCl is administered.

·               Lower Booster doses of (50-200mg.) Ibogaine HCl are given every few months to reduce potential cravings for the addicted drug.

·               Clinical Study with Ibogaine - Primary Objective: Evaluate the long-term efficacy in the Ibogaine treatment for long-term drug abuse.

·               Addiction Severity, Cravings, and Anxiety scales will be used to evaluate the patients in a double-blind placebo controlled study.

·               CCC has been working with lawyers in Brazil for years to get Ibogaine listed as a registered medication; this is believed to be achieved in 1 year.

·               Jose Carlos Bouso (ICEERS) - Long Term Effects of Ayahuasca Use on Mental Health.

·               To establish whether long-term use of Ayahuasca leads to any sort of addictive qualities and effects, with the primary focus on indigenous use.

·               Mapiá, Brazil is a village where there was one of the Ayahuasca churches was used for research; this was the study group for the research.

·                Boca do Acre was used as the control group for the study. See ICEERS website for in-depth graphs on the personality traits noted and results plotted from this research.

·               Conclusions - The ritual use of Ayahuasca has not been associated with the psychological and detrimental effects related with many other psychoactive drugs.

·               Ayahuasca users scored higher in spirituality and reduced depression when compared to a Control group in a personality test.

·               Studying indigenous people who have been using Ayahuasca for around 50 years at least once or twice a week.

·               Jordi Riba (ICEERS) - Studies on the Biotransformation of DMT in Humans.

·               DMT - Powerful psychedelic if smoked or injected, commonly found in thousands of plants and even debatably in many animals. It acts on the traditional 5-HT2a receptor as well as a few other receptors.

·               Ayahuasca brews often contain DMT + Harmala Compounds.

·               These compounds can be Harmine, Harmaline, THH, etc.

·               The MAO process in the body leads to a reaction known as oxidative deamination.

·               It is responsible for degrading numerous neurotransmitters such as Serotonin changing the compound to 5-OH-indoleacetaldehyde.

·               MAO also oxidizes exogenous substances such as N,N-Dimethyltryptamine that is oxidized into Indoleacetalhyde, then Indoleacetic Acid that is easily passed in urine.

·               An introduction of a Harmala alkaloid (MAOi) will block the MAO effect and allow DMT concentrations in the body to accumulate in the blood.

·               When DMT 25 mg. is ingested orally 97% is excreted as Indoleacetic Acid in the urine as well as DMT-N-Oxide with 3%. This DMT-N-Oxide is actually a MAO specific metabolite itself. No visionary effects can be found with oral DMT due to the bodies MAOi effect.

·               When DMT is ingested smoked 62% is excreted as Indoleacetic Acid, with 10% N,N-DMT un-metabolized and 28% DMT-N-Oxide produced.

·               When DMT is ingested as Ayahuasca, Indoleacetic Acid is still present, which means the MAO effect is still not fully blocked in the body. Also  un-metabolized N,N-DMT is found, as well as the unique DMT-N-Oxide is still found. Another unique metabolite is N-methyltryptamine (NMT), and 2-methyl-tetrahydro-betacarboline, which actually is a DMT/MAO byproduct and not that of Harmala alkaloids.

·               Conclusions - Oxidative deamination by MAO is only one of the various pathways available for DMT.

·               Even in the presence of a MAOi, the molecule is still rapidly cleared from the human body.

·               Òscar Parés (ICEERS) - Ayahuasca: the Criminalization of an Ancient Tradition: Law, Science and New Challenges.

·               Protection of indigenous practices as well as keeping Ibogaine and Ayahuasca focus in a medical, spiritual, and positive educational manner of usage.

·               Internationally Ayahuasca and its use are recognized as a wholly legal plant/mixture though many countries rarely respect this.

·               Torsten Passie (Harvard Medical School, USA) - Altered States of Consciousness Induced by Nitrous Oxide.

·               History of N2O, Humphrey Davy was an early explorer of N2O.

·               N2O was used also extensively in upper class parties and social gatherings.

·               William James was an extensive writer and philosopher with N2O.

·               N2O is a known greenhouse gas with 30% produced by the oceans; alone it does not work well enough to reduce pain as a general anesthetic.

·               Pharmacology - Rapid rise of blood levels, very short half-life > wash out in 15 minutes; as well as sympathetic stimulation.

·               No alteration of CBF and brain metabolism. Its mechanism of action is still unknown.

·               Dimensions of OAVAV-Questions - Oceanic boundlessness was compared to dread of ego dissolution, or visionary restructuring.

·               Also vigilance reduction and auditory changes were recorded within the 12 healthy test subjects.

·               Visual aspects of N2O are much different then those visual changes that occur with traditional psychedelics.

·               Implications - 2d order hallucinogen with impressions of mystical states, it posses fleeting, non-lasting effects. It possesses no psychodynamic effects with almost no psychotherapeutic effects that can be found.

·               Dangers - No grave psychological dangers found, oxygen deficiency caused by sustained use, incoordination/loss of reality, synthesis of vitamin B12 inhibited.

·               Levente Móró (University of Turku, Finland) - Why Psychedelics? A Comparison of Psychoactive Drug Use Purposes.

·               Areas of Interest - Cognitive Neuroscience, Consciousness Research, Altered States of Consciousness, Dreaming, Hypnosis, Meditation.

·               Also Hallucinations involving with Stimulants, Depressants, and Hallucinogens.

·               Mainly focused on entheogens such as Psilocybin, LSA, Mescaline, and Salvia.

·               Psychoactive Drug Use I- Complex phenomenon: many drugs and use patterns.

·               Society discourages and disregards the opinions and voice of the user, even omitting and altering their opinions in news media.

·               Studies using online questionaries’ focusing on drug use by category, Stimulants, Depressants, Hallucinogens, and a Control Fake Drug.

·               This study also focused on the reasons and purposes that users choose to take a psychoactive compound and why.

·               Psychedelic Drug Use II - To study the pharmacology response on the mental outlook and mood of users who take psychedelic drugs.

·               Study group of 277 Non-Problematic Drug Users.

·               Drug Use Parameters: Number of psychedelic drugs Used and reasoning for using these drugs.

·               In conclusion psychedelic drug users seem a lot more at peace and calm with their lives; aggression was much lower compared to the control group.
